INTERPOL: how the organisation processes personal data and where its powers end

INTERPOL does not investigate criminal cases or issue arrest warrants. It transmits information between the police of its member countries — and must do so under its own rules.

How INTERPOL handles information

Each member country has a National Central Bureau (NCB) through which its police send requests, record data in INTERPOL’s Information System and receive information from other countries.

  • Article 2 of the Constitution requires cooperation in the spirit of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
  • Article 3 of the Constitution forbids any intervention or activities of a political, military, religious or racial character.
  • The Rules on the Processing of Data (RPD) set requirements for data quality, lawfulness and the publication of notices.

Independent oversight

Compliance is overseen by the Commission for the Control of INTERPOL’s Files, which also decides individual requests for access, correction and deletion.
